The Christmas Star

On December 5, 2012 I went to see the musical “The Christmas Star” put on by Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Colonial Heights, VA. The story is set during WWII. It tells of one woman’s struggle with anxiety caused by her husband being on the front lines during the Christmas season. I really enjoyed the musical selections played by the orchestra and sung by the cast, and the acting seemed very professional. Below is the synopsis and picture from the playbill. I also took some pictures I want to share with my readers, and I’d be interested to know if anyone recognizes them.

The Christmas Star

The Christmas star has long been a symbol of hope---hope in the form of Jesus

Christ, God's son, who came to Earth to seek and save those who are lost and hurting.

However, during World War II the symbol of the star took on new meaning: a blue

star in the window meant that a family had a loved one serving in the military. Some

families had two, three, even four stars, representing the patriotic service of daughters,

sons, and husbands. A gold star replaced the blue star when soldiers and sailors gave

their lives in the battle for freedom. Lieutenant Arthur Flannigan, a US soldier fighting

on the front lines, knows firsthand the difficulty and dangers of war. His wife, Sophie,

is anxiously waiting for him to return home. Sophie dreads the sight of all stars, until

a friend reminds her that the Christmas star stills points the way to Jesus, and to the

hope and comfort that she needs.
