I’ve been browsing the Internet just out of curiosity and found ways people repurpose shipping containers, making them into guest houses, summer getaways, tree houses, or even permanent dwellings. You can stack the containers like building blocks or place them however you want, then add electricity, plumbing, and anything else you want to make them livable. If you use refrigerated containers, you get instant insulation! You can make the floors out of recycled car tires, or bamboo, or wood. You can slide open the walls to bring the outdoors indoors. You can replace the metal sides with glass for fantastic views. You can make your home blend in with its surroundings like a hobbit’s house. You can even build a house inside a shipping container house, like someone did on the website below. Isn’t that creative? It makes me want a shipping container home for myself!

Or, how about a yurt home?

These round structures are lightweight and can be used as playhouses, cabins at campgrounds, studios, or dwelling places. They are very roomy and they take only days to set up. They are very affordable, too. At Yurts of America, for example, the prices range from $7,518 for a 16-foot yurt to $13,596 for a 30-foot yurt.

I think it would be neat to live in a yurt or a container house because with just me and two cats, I don’t need much space. I like these ideas for “green living.”  What do you think about them?
